Scanners are simple machines, but the two main types do very different jobs. Pick by what you scan: loose pages, or books and fragile originals.
Our range and service details are on the scanner sales and service page.
Flatbed scanners
You lift the lid and place one page on the glass. A flatbed is right for photos, bound books, ID cards and delicate documents. It is slow for stacks of paper.
Sheet-fed (ADF) scanners
You load a stack and the automatic document feeder pulls each page through. This is the type for offices digitising files, invoices and forms. Look for duplex scanning, which reads both sides in one pass.
Resolution and speed
For text documents, 300 dpi is enough and keeps files small. Photos and drawings benefit from 600 dpi or more. Speed is given in pages per minute; for daily office use it matters more than extreme resolution.
Brands to compare
Look at Canon CanoScan and imageFORMULA, Epson Perfection and WorkForce, HP ScanJet, Brother ADS and the Fujitsu fi Series. Banks that scan cheques need a different machine; see our cheque scanner guide.

Common questions
Why are there lines in my scans?
Usually dust or marks on the scan glass or sensor. Cleaning fixes most cases; if not, the sensor or lamp needs a check.
Can a printer replace a scanner?
A multifunction printer scans well for light use. For daily stacks of paper, a dedicated sheet-fed scanner is much faster.
